Observations from the Unemployed

I have worked since I was 14 years old...being paid under the table at our family doctor's office. If you count babysitting, I started that at 12 years old. It is bizarre not going to a full time commitment every day.

I seem to find enough to do, though. Contrary to MY belief, I am pretty domestic. My new passion is cooking. I say many thanks to Travis, who is the best guinea pig ever, and such a good sport to try my new recipes.

Some lessons learned and observations:

* Not to take insurance for granted...and the process to change coverage is lengthy.
* Not to have my life insurance and retirement exclusively with my employer. After this is all said and done (hours and hours and hours spent on the phone and filling out paperwork) I will have my own policies and investments. The next employers' benefits will just be icing on the cake.
* When people hear I am laid off, they often say, "So, do you still work for DIRECTV?". I don't know what to respond. "Uh, no." seems rude. Does being "laid off" mean different things to different people? Still learning that one.
* When you don't have insurance coverage...is the time you need insurance coverage!!! I will not complain about the ~$200 prescription. Still cheaper than a child.
* I use less Chapstick and chew less gum.
* I never in a million years thought I'd miss weekly reports, but I do.
* When I get nervous, my nose runs. Apparently, this is new, since I don't remember that happening when I last interviewed (over 5 years ago). But when I interviewed for a job last week that I really wanted (over the phone, thank goodness) it was like a flood!
* I admire stay at home people. It's been so fun spoiling Travis, but I am not cut out for this housewife business. Time to get a move on!

I'm sure I will have more on the subject later, since I start with a job placement service this month (courtesy of my severance package).

Til next time!!
